StationBreak: Flight of the Conchords

They’ve got a show on HBO and they’re rocking an awesome tour right now that I cannot see because the tickets were all sold out, so I guess I’ll just have to settle for writing about how awesome I think the Flight of the Conchords are. Brett and Jermaine hail from that country near Australlier — you might’ve heard of it? Noo Zeelend?

The thing I really, really, really love about this group is the way they’re able to take so many different genres and topics and turn them into songs in such a loving and hilarious way. Their song “Foux du Fafa” doesn’t actually mean anything, but that doesn’t stop them from singing the whole song in French that’s clearly out of a phrase book. One of their newest singles, “Carol Brown”, explores the world of relationships past as Jermaine tries desperately to woo a new love interest while a choir of his ex-girlfriends sing about why they broke up with him.

Then there’s their love song parody “The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)”. Where else, but in a Conchords song, would you hear the lyrics “and when you’re on the street, depending on the street, I bet you are definitely in the top three…good looking girls on the street”.

The thing about their parodies is that all of them are fantastic pieces of music, too, and they don’t just rely on the clever lyrics and silly jokes to keep an audience. I bought their album on iTunes recently and am happy with just about every single song. If you’ve ever even remotely enjoyed a laugh or if you just like smiling, I think you’re going to have a great time with the Conchords.

It’s Business Time!
