How To Effectively Use The Touchscreen On Your PDA

pda reviews
Gregg Hall asked:

PDAs, or personal digital assistants, are similar to computers in many ways. One way they are different is that you typically use a touch screen to input data to your PDA. On a computer, you would type on a keyboard or point and click with a mouse. With a PDA, you simply tap the screen with a stylus.

The touch screen is used in various ways. One is the virtual keyboard. The letters, numerals, and other characters are displayed on the screen just as they are situated on an actual keyboard. It is only a picture, but if you tap the characters with the stylus you can create documents on your PDA. This is also good for setting up appointments on a calendar or writing a to-do list.

You can also tap some of the touch screen figures to activate buttons or select from a menu. You can tap and drag the stylus to highlight the information that is the most important to you. The touch screen is very versatile.

Another use of the touch screen and stylus is letter or word recognition. In this mode, letters or words are actually written with the stylus onto the screen. The PDA takes this data and converts it into computer text characters. This technology has been met with mixed reviews. Some like the way it works while others find it inadequate.

In stroke recognition, certain strokes are set up to correspond to the different characters on the keyboard. The strokes are easy to learn because they are similar to the letters. They are also easier for the PDA to recognize and so work better than letter or word recognition.

One thing to remember when using a PDA touch screen is that you only have to tap it lightly to get the effect you want. If you have to jab hard at the touch screen, it means there is something wrong. You may, for example, need to clean it.

When you clean your touch screen, be sure to use an electronic cleaner. Dust and other foreign material can get on the touch screen of your PDA. A daily cleaning will keep it working at its peak performance.

It may be tempting to use a pen or other pointed object to tap on the touch screen. This can damage the touch screen so much that you will not be able to use the PDA at all. Make sure that you keep track of the stylus so that you can always use it.

You can protect the touch screen with screen covers that are available in any department store. They come in multi-packs so that you can get several at one time. They will keep dust and dirt out when you are not using the PDA. They can be used for a period of time so that you do not have to have a new one every time you take out your PDA.

Using a touch screen on a PDA is easy. Whether you are using a virtual keyboard, tapping menu choices, or using one of the letter or stroke recognition systems, you will find that the touch screen offers ways to input data into your PDA.

A Review of ITUNES Music Downloads

pda reviews
Ian Koch asked:

Itunes is the distribution software used by Apple to download mp3 files to their IPod devices. Free music downloads for Itunes would therefore mean free music for MacIntosh computers only, except they also offer a Windows version for the Microsoft PC. The Microsoft world also uses its Windows Media Player to distribute mp3 and mpeg files to PDA and other similar devices to Apple’s IPod.

You can freely download free tunes from the Apple Itunes website. There is website that appears like it might be the grail of free downloads, Napster it allows the registered member to listen to each song in a 2,000,000 catalogue free for five times. After listening to 10,000,000 songs or each song five times, you must take a subscription. However, the subscription fee is pretty decent so most of us can afford it. This will allow you to listen to more songs and download those you wish listen on your IPod or PDA. There is another subscription called “Napster on the Go”, allows you to download your playlist and to refill your mp3 player with unlimited songs for $14.95. That’s what I will call a reasonable fee.

When I hear the phrases ‘music downloads’ or ‘mp3′ I always think about hip hop, rap and rock music. Why is that? My imagination tells me that it is only young people like teenagers and student who downloads this kind of music and that all downloadable music is of this kind. And my impression is that most people think that way too. But I’ll tell you one thing: I couldn’t be more wrong. Itunes and similar web sites are offering all kinds of music for download.

Itunes musical selection presented on their web site covers a more traditional menu. I was able to select bagpipe, gospel, jazz and even Papuan War Chants, something I haven’t been able to for four years. Perhaps Napster is more geared to pleasing the customer rather than the new wave music artist. There selections are alternative, Christian, Classical, Country, Dance/Electronic, Hip Hop, Jazz, Latin, Pop, R and B, Rock, World, New Releases, Recommends, Playlists, Napsterline, FFWD (Brand new artists), and RWND (reminiscence on music and musicians past).

Perhaps what all American websites are cautious about is breaking copyright laws. The entire free music download site scene is some variation of “listen free somewhat; but don’t count on free downloads”! Perhaps Napster’s legal battle has reversed the title of this article to “Don’t you wish there really were free music download web sites?”

How to Replace a Digital Camera Battery Charger

How To Replace a Digital Camera Battery Charger

Your digital camera battery charger isn’t even part of your camera, but without it you can’t get your digital camera to work-or at least not for more than a few hours. It’s a bit of a catch 22: you can’t keep your battery charger with your camera at all times, it’s just not practical; but you also need to have it handy in case your digital camera’s battery needs a charge. For me, this means moving it all over the house to different wall sockets and even taking it with me on trips when I know I’ll be using my camera a lot. All this shifting and moving about inevitably results in a misplaced or-when I’m finally ready to admit it-lost digital camera battery charger.

A lost digital camera battery charger poses a serious problem: it can be hard to find a replacement, but your digital camera still works fine. Although the hunt for a matching battery charger can be frustrating, if you know your digital camera’s make and model, you should be able to find a replacement battery charger by utilizing one of the below sources.

Digital Camera Manufacturer. If you go to your camera manufacturer’s website, you should be able to browse for replacement parts. As long as you know the make and model of your camera (which you should be able to find printed on the camera itself), you can assure yourself that you’ll be getting the appropriate replacement digital camera battery charger. Visit Canon, Sony or any other major digital camera manufacturer’s website to find replacement parts. Or, if you’re more comfortable speaking to a person, you can call your digital camera manufacturer’s 800 number for assistance.

Third Party Vendor. If you’re looking for a discounted digital camera battery charger, you may want to look at sites like  http://www.cheap-digital-camera-batteries.co.uk . These third party vendors often sell replacement parts from a variety of manufacturers at discounted rates. You must still know your digital camera’s make and model to assure that you are purchasing the appropriate replacement. You may be able to find universal digital camera battery chargers as well, but you should double check to ensure that your camera’s battery will fit in the universal charger you are considering.

Individual Vendor. Sites like eBay and Craigslist allow individuals to post ads for items that they are trying to sell. Ebay is a mixture of businesses and individuals and encourages buyers to bid on products in an auction-like environment. You’ll likely have better luck on eBay than on Craigslist since it boasts a larger quantity of more sophisticated sellers. However, check both if you’re looking for a deal and you might just luck out.

Retail Store. Electronics retail stores like Circuit City and Best Buy sell digital camera accessories, including battery chargers. Anywhere that you can buy a digital camera, you can probably buy a digital camera battery charger. Check your camera’s make and model, then either head to the store or get online to browse through your digital camera battery charger options.

Review Of O2XDA Atom Mobile

pda reviews
Lijo George asked:

work and huddled around to watch excitedly as the wrapping was torn off and we opened the box to review it!The Atom Life enters the Indian market as part of 02’s new strategy to divide its five main product segments: performance, lifestyle, messaging, hybrids, and smartphones. The products in each segment have feature sets appropriate for their target market. This device fits into the lifestyle category with its good looks and multimedia capabilities. Speaking at its launch in Mumbai recently, 02 Asia Pacific and the Middle East CEO, Mark Billington, stated that the Atom Life is a PDA that will power the user both at work and play. We decided to put this claim to test.

Packed with Features

The 02 XDA Atom Life is a tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 phone with GPRS and EDGE capabilities. The built-in Wi-Fi functionality makes it an excellent device to check e-mail on the go. GPS (Global Positioning System) navigation is not built in, but it’s possible to add an external receiver. The Atom Life is 3G capable-the front-mounted VGA camera makes video calling simplistic In-call voice reception is nice and dean.

The Atom Life runs on Windows Mobile 5, so mobile versions of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel are included. These applications ens that your work won’t suffer no matter where you are. Other preinstalled applications include 02 AutoConfig, 02 Autolnstall, 02 Connect, 02 MediaPlus. 02 SMSPIus, and 02 PhonePlus, which make the phone economically strong. 02 Connect offers access to software updates via a GPRS connection, while 02 MediaPlus allows you to access all your stored music, videos, and photos from a single interface. You can use PocketMSN to access your Hotmail account and chat with your contacts through MSN Messenger. The Internet Explorer makes browsing the web a breeze. There’s also a mobile version of Windows Media Player 10. And to round off the package, there is Microsoft ActiveSync to connect the Atom Life to your PC.The Atom Life is powered by an Irte XScale PXA 270 processor running at a mind-blowing 624 MHz. We were impressed by the capabilities of this processor, which was able to multitask and run heavy applications without am hiccups. It features 64 MB RAM and 1GB of internal flash memory. A MiniSD card slot for expanding the memory is located on the top of the phone.

Camera

The 2 megapixel camera takes decent pictures with resolutions ranging from 80×60 to 1600×1200. An LED strobe flash and a self-portrait mirror are also built in.

Shaping the Masterpiece

At first glance, the Atom Life looks like any other 02 model, but look closely and you’ll see a few subtle differences. The device’s glossy black plastic screen is the in-call speaker grille, which also houses status lights-green for standby, red for charging, and blue to show that Bluetooth is switched on. Volume controls are on the left, and the camera and record buttons are on the right. Keys on the front panel include call accept and reject controls, two soft and media player shortcut keys.

The Atom Life weighs 145 grams which is quite light for a PDA. Its slick form makes it a true style statement.

Chinks in the Shining Armour

02 markets the Atom Life as a PDA that doubles up as a multimedia device. Even though it has SRS-WOW surround speakers, the volume levels could have been higher. The glossy black plastic finish is prone to fingerprints and smudges, and the chrome plating- especially around the stylus holder slot-wears out easily with heavy use. The 2.7-inch LCD screen might look good at first, but it isn’t the clearest we have seen. Team this up with terrible viewing angles and you have real disappointment on your hands. The quality of still and video photography is also below average.

Verdict

The 02 Xda Atom Life is a brilliant device, and a great solution for all your business and multimedia needs. There’s a chance that you might find it a little confusing to handle initially but once you get the hang of it, organizing your daily schedules and carrying out vital daily tasks will become very convenient. Also, the enhanced multimedia functions make the Atom Life a pleasure to work with. The elegant shape ensures that you are carrying a guaranteed style statement in your pocket. As the maufacturers said-the Xda Atom Life surely does power you at work and play!

Must Have Checklist: Choosing a Smart Phone or Pda

Yung Trang asked:

by Yung Trang

Purchasing a smart phone or PDA may seem like a luxury, but for many they are essential tools of productivity. For those pressed for time, or who are frequently away from a home or work computer they rely on heavily, these devices quickly pay for themselves in efficiency.

Features of PDAs and Smart Phones

Personal Digital Assistants offer many of the same tools and toys of a PC in a handheld size. (If they also function as a mobile phone, they’re called smart phones.) Usually sporting a Microsoft Windows or Palm operating system, most of them support:

· Reading email

· Address books / contact managers

· Instant messaging

· Listening to music

· Shopping on the Web

· Editing spreadsheets

· Writing documents and letters

· Reading ebooks

· Creating presentations

· Shooting and viewing quality photos and videos

· Playing computer games

· Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless technologies

· Global Positioning (GPS) software

· Synchronization with MAC or PC

· Voice-activated dialing

Keep in Mind

· Size and quality of the screen are very important – especially for those with limited visual acuity. Larger screens mean a larger price tag.

· Touch screens are convenient for those who struggle with small keyboards, but require more concentration and dexterity to use accurately. They must be reset frequently for proper alignment. Many handheld games still must be played using keys rather than a stylus.

· Smart phones are heavier than cell phones, and those with larger screens tend to be heavier. The extra weight often requires the use of a headset and carrying case.

· Keyboards tend to be either very small, sometimes with a unique key layout, or larger with the standard QWERTY layout.

· A faster documented processor speed doesn’t always mean faster real-time speeds. Be sure to test and compare devices.

· 3G technology offers broadband speeds for surfing the web.

· Storage space on PDAs is usually minimal, but expansion slots allow for removable storage. Storage cards can offer as much storage as you need at additional cost.

· Cameras should be at least 1.3 megapixels for reasonable quality, and being able to zoom makes a big difference.

· A PDA with integrated phone, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS keeps the number of necessary devices and wires to a minimum and maximizes mobility.

· GPS may cost extra to use.

· Removable lithium cell batteries are easy to replace without having to go to a service center.

· Most cell phone companies require that smart phone owners have a PDA package at additional cost – the device cannot just be used as a phone at a lower rate.

· Many websites are not yet able to display properly on PDAs and smart phones.
